Thinking about a career in sales? There are some basic things to consider when searching for your sales job. With these basic tools, the search for a sales representative job will be easier. There are five important elements to consider while you are on your search towards a rewarding career in sales.

  1. Create a good resume.
  2. Work with a company that shares your beliefs.
  3. Use your listening skills.
  4. Set concrete goals.
  5. The future is in the follow up.

A resume is an important tool that will aid in finding your sales job searches. The resume doesn’t have to be complicated or fancy. It does need to include your name, contact information, objective, professional summary, experience, education and professional affiliations. The potential employer may request references.

Find a company that shares your same beliefs. It will be difficult, as a sales representative, to have clients see the benefit of the products you are sharing with them if you don’t believe in them. Make sure the company you are seeking employment with offers you the tools that you need to have a successful career in sales. These tools can include:

  1. Professional Training
  2. Paid Vacation
  3. Health Benefits
  4. Mileage Reimbursement
  5. Providing equipment (such as a laptop or cell phone)
  6. Retirement

Use your listening skills when working with potential employers. This skill is vitally important as a sales professional. People tend to do business with people that they know and trust. There are a few simple ways to improve your listening skills:

  1. Make eye contact.
  2. Be prepared to listen.
  3. Don’t interrupt.
  4. Pay attention.
  5. Listen for the things that are left unsaid.

What are your personal goals? Consider what it is that you want out of life. Do you desire a temporary sales job or a career in sales? It is easy to begin as an entry-level sales agent and move towards having a sales career. Have a solid goal with landmark milestones to mark each achievement. Remember to reward yourself for a job well done.

Consider where you are located. The beauty of a career in sales is that you can work in virtually any state. Some of these jobs also allow the opportunity for travel within different cities, which can be a perk.

Set some concrete goals for yourself. Have milestones for each goal that you want to accomplish. If one of your goals is to send out 10 resumes each week, get yourself a calendar and mark down each resume you send and to whom you sent it. This will help you keep track of where you applied and keep you on point on the follow up.

The future is in the follow-up. This applies not only when working with customers and potential clients, but when working with potential employers as well. It takes more than just submitting a resume to obtain any job. It may be necessary to make a few follow-up phone calls to the company.

Combine all of these tips and you will find a successful and fulfilling job as a sales representative with the right company.
