Are you a natural, charismatic person? Perhaps a career in sales is for you. Merchant processing has a number of positions open for motivated and eager sales professionals. Of course, if you are new to sales, you might have some questions, and you might have some concerns. For a successful career in sales there are a couple of things that any professional or beginner should keep in mind.

Your journey to a successful career in sales begins with your cover letter. If you can’t sell yourself, a company is unlikely to believe that you can successfully sell their product or service. Be careful though, because you don’t want to come across as cheesy or overbearing.

Are you new to a career in sales? That does not mean that you won’t be good at it. Transferable skills are a big commodity in the sales market, especially if you are going into a career in sales where you can provide services or products to people in your previous career. In a way, a career in sales is a bit of a chameleon and will help allow you to utilize the skills that you have acquired throughout your professional life. If a job in sales will be your first step on the employment ladder, explain what you have learned in school that will be of benefit to you and your employers, as well as your potential customers. Enthusiasm will go a long way in “closing the sale”.

Do you have the opportunity to work along with established sales people in your new field? If so, take advantage of it. You might not be earning commissions on the sales that are made, but following an established and successful person will more than likely give you ideas and helpful hints that you can put to work in your own sales interviews. Every advantage that you can gain will help you be a successful sales person.

Networking is also key for sales reps, whether new or established. Networking in your customers or potential customers congregate or associate can help you obtain more customers. More importantly however, is networking within your own professional networks. This will help you find new opportunities and learn about customers that might be in need of your services or products. Being open to learning from your fellow representatives and having an open mind for new techniques and practices will help you be a better sales person.
